Junior Wheelchair Sports
BACK The first junior wheelchair sports camp was started in June 1984. This free camp open to physically disabled youngsters ages 5-18 was held at Overland High School and Utah Park in Aurora, Colorado. Until 1981, there were no sports programs like this specifically for kids in wheelchairs. For many years, there have been programs for the mentally challenged and severely handicapped children, but nothing for disabled children who were “mainstreamed,” that is, able to participate with and compete with able-bodied children. But now, through participation in the Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp, these children have the opportunity to see that their possibilities are limitless…that handicaps in life are only as big as one cares to make them.
